Tipton Jones-Boiter

My longtime friend, Whitney, has been quite the world traveler. Around 2013, I started making paintings from some of the photos from her travels. This was one of those.

This is from a photo taken at the Festival of Lights in Lyon, France. If you're not familiar with it, you may think I took some liberties with the colors on the building. I did not! This was how vibrant they were in the actual photo.

They project different configurations of bright colors onto Saint-Jean Cathedral in a beautiful light show. I wanted to capture that energy.

Other that the watercolor painting itself, I added mirror bits and painted the frame an iridescent blue color. This was also one that was unlike any of my other pieces. It was an intuitive piece that developed as I created.
